How to Create the Perfect Holiday Tablescape

Thanksgiving is just around the corner with weeks of hosting and entertaining guests coming along with it. Whether you are hosting the in-laws at Christmas, friends for New Year’s, or colleagues for a seasonal dinner party, it’s time to get your home dressed to impress for the holidays. Look for simple ways to get maximum impact so you can focus your energy on time with loved ones.

 

Adding a tablecloth or runner is an easy first step when decorating your dining space. Choosing a neutral color can be the perfect starting point for the rest of your table to come to life. Design experts encourage gray, cream, white, or tan as possible base colors. House Beautiful suggests opting for a minimal table and adding texture on top with fabric and other more detailed elements. 

 

Using a warm, seasonal tone as the base of your design allows you to incorporate bold elements to add personality. Think about holiday-related colors as accents like bright red, gold and white, as well as deep green. Another bonus to the more neutral-colored runners and tablecloths is the endless possibilities of add-ons. You can add Advent candles or Hanukkah Menorahs for a more religious setting, greenery and ribbons, or stylized table settings and decorative wine glasses. A calmly colored tablecloth is the perfect foundation to your holiday masterpiece!

 

Don’t be afraid to blend styles with some elements of the tableware. Using various textured napkin rings, patterned cloth napkins, or printed place mats can build off of that neutral runner to add some dimension. Be mindful to keep your color pallette tight if you are incorporating different hues, as to not overwhelm your guests. It is possible to create layers with some contrasting elements like rustic greenery and mixed metals while staying in line with your general theme.

 

Avoid the possible confusion or drama of choosing seats by setting seat arrangements for your guests. Placecards are the perfect opportunity to get creative and show some personality. Add printed designs or simple props like rosemary and clementines (hint: they’ll also make the whole room smell amazing) to make those name cards stand out.
